Wear a Helmet
Protecting the head is important when riding a scooter, much like it is with a bike. A scooter certainly isn't as powerful as a motorcycle, but the impact to the head can be devastating, in the event of an accident. A good fitting helmet can keep kids safer without limiting the fun! Some states require riders to wear a helmet, so play it safe on all accounts and invest in a top-rated helmet.
Protect Arms, Knees, and Elbows
Protecting the head is the most important rule of scooter safety. Protecting other commonly injured body parts is a good idea because falls happen! Elbow and knee pads can save a lot of pain in the event of a fall. Similarly, wearing hand protection is a good idea to avoid scraped palms.
Stay in Sight
Scooters are fairly inconspicuous. Adding some reflective gear can help prevent accidents while adding flair to the scooter! Distracted driving is a reality and as much as we would like to think our children will stay on the sidewalk, the chances of that happening are slimmer than a scooter!
While it looks really neat to be able to abruptly stop, it is also a vital part of safe scooter riding. Have the kids practice their stopping skills before allowing them to venture out. Defensive scooter riding can prevent a lot of accidents not only for your children but also the pedestrians they will encounter on their adventures!
Proper footwear, like trainers, or thick soled shoes with ankle support will keep your child protected from falls, debris, and the moving wheels! Flip flops and sandals are not a good choice for scooter riders because they don't offer much protection.
Regularly Inspect The Scooter
Take the time to check your children's scooters to make sure they are in proper working order, free from damage. A simple repair now can save your child from a painful accident later. The scooter should be inspected prior to the first use to make sure there are no loose parts or production errors.
