There is an old adage that has always struck a chord in my heart. Families that play together stay together. With play being the most important job of childhood, encouraging my children to jump into fun and games is my priority. I love to get involved in their adventures at every opportunity in hopes that understand you are never too old to enjoy life, to live in the moment and to play!
I have 5 fun ideas for families that want to play together! These are all tried and tested ways for a fun time that I hope your family will enjoy as much as mine.
1. Have a Dress Up Session
Get out old hats, scarves, costume jewelry, dresses, and jackets! Let everyone pick out their own outfit. After everyone is dressed grab your phone and start snapping shots together as a family! Make sure to encourage the family to trade accessories and snap more photos! Bonus points for making silly faces!
2. Bust Out the Board Games
There is something downright addictive about family game night. There are of course the yummy snacks and the chance to engage in friendly competition, but there is something really special about the magic in the eyes of your children as they discover board games that you loved at their age. It really takes nostalgia to a whole new level of cool.
3. Go to an Arcade
Who can resist the lights, sounds and noise of an arcade? Certainly not any child that I have ever met. While a trip to the arcade is always enticing for my children, their excitement level goes up a notch when they know it is family night. There is something incredibly exciting about beating the pants off of Mom or Dad at a game that maybe the parents don't understand completely. My kids are always thrilled that there are extra prize tokens to be had when the adults get involved at the arcade and it becomes a game on its own to see how many tickets we can collect. Cashing the tickets in is even better!
4. Get Sporty
Sports are a great way to play together as a family. From a backyard baseball game to running an obstacle course together, there is no wrong way to play sports together as a family. Everyone is sure to have a good time and the physical activity will make everyone feel good because endorphins you guys!
5. Build Something
I don't know anyone that can resist a pile of Legos. I have spent many hours picking them up over the years, but truth told, I would have cut that pickup time in half if I had not been enticed to create something while I was cleaning up. Getting the Legos out and inviting the entire family to jump in and work together to build a project is a recipe for family fun with a scoop of creativity for good measure.
There are other benefits of playing together as a family that go beyond bonding and fun and games! Did you know that when families play together children begin to understand the concept of cooperation and that children begin to form the foundations of being a team, sharing and taking turns? These are all skills that will help your child for life.
I hope these 5 ideas help to inspire your family to play together, and to play together often!
