A Texas Holdem Poker Strategy Guide: How to Handle Starting Hands

Author: Patrik Karlsson

When playing Texas Holdem Poker on an internet Poker room for the first time, many new players start playing using the strategy they would use as if they were playing in their friends basement a normal poker game: this is the best strategy to lose all your money fast, though.

Texas Holdem has got very different gaming strategies that are up to several factors and one of them is how to correctly manage your starting hand.

In fact, actually it is more probable that the hand ends before that the flop is shown instead that the hand finishes with the showdown.

Moreover, your behaviour when dealing your starting hand should evaluate the other players strategy, how many players are in the table, and what is your position in the table itself.

When starting playing poker you should play tight to learn how to play in the field.

Lets analyze some pretty common hands to see and understand what to play and what to fold.

AA or KK starting hands are very strong hands, which give you some serious advantage from other players. Having those hands will let you raise when its your turn, and to re-raise whether the pot was previously raised. Knowing how other players are behaving, you might want to limp in with your hand, meaning that you should call to see the flop.

If you have an AK, suited or not (also known as the Big Slick) you should do as you were doing for an AA or KK: raise the pot when your turn comes. It is not recommended to limp around though.

A great mistake of new players is to over evaluate a starting hand such as A (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 suited or not). Even if its featuring an A, this hand is not giving you anything particular. You should fold in that case and wait for the next hand. Obviously you must evaluate the number of players in the table. In a full table an A- starting hand means like having nothing: then you should absolutely fold.

This situation would be slightly different if you were playing directly against one opponent only, especially with an A-9o (off suit). You would also go into the pot if you were the dealer and only the blinds were in the pot.

This strategy will be known to advanced poker player but its an important one for any beginner in the game. Get you head in the game and learn before you play.
