Cluster Headaches

Author: Steve Valentino

Cluster headaches are rare headaches that often occur in groups or clusters and are frequently associated with drooping eyelids, red, watery eyes and nasal congestion on the affected side of the face. This is also characterized by severe headaches of piercing quality near one eye or temple that last for between fifteen minutes to three hours.

Victims of this condition do not only feel an intense pain, but also experience disabling effects and impacts on emotions, marriage, finances and other obligations at school or work. This also diminishes the quality of the patient's life, that is why one should find a remedy and undergo treatment as early as possible.

There are several treatments available to help decrease the severity of pain and shorten the headache period. These include induction therapy, maintenance therapy, symptomatic therapy, natural herbs and supplements, melatonin, and yoga and meditation.

Induction and maintenance therapies begin together and are used in order to reduce the frequency and intensity of cluster headaches and improve the victim's quality of life. Both of these therapies are prophylactic treatments that are meant only to prevent cluster headaches from occurring and not to stop the pain. Meanwhile, symptomatic therapy is meant to stop or shorten the headache. This includes sumatriptan injection, oxygen inhalation and application of local anesthetics inside the nose.

Other treatments can include natural herbs and supplements like magnesium. These are proven to show some benefits in about 40% of cluster headaches patients. Another is melatonin. This has been shown to be relatively effective in reducing headache severity and frequency. Some cluster headaches are triggered by stress, so stress techniques like yoga and meditation may be effective too.

Although there is no exact cure for cluster headaches, these treatments will give you pain relief. That is why if you are suffering from this condition, you should not hesitate to seek medical attention in order to determine which treatment will best work for you.
