Colonic Irrigation

Author: Theodore Frazer

Colon Irrigation Definition: Irrigation of the colon- The use of liquid solutions given by enema to remove material from the rectum or colon, ostensibly to eliminate toxins from the bowel. Also known as colonic irrigation and high colonics.

How Colon Irrigation Treatments Are Done

Treatments are usually performed in a special clinic. At the time of treatment, the therapist will insert a small tube into your rectum. This tube is called a speculum; its about 51/2 inches long. The speculum is attached to a plastic hose connected to a colon irrigation machine. Then the Colon irrigation machine will put purified, warm water into the five-foot length of your colon.

The colon starts to have the muscles contract from the water. This forces the fecal matter out through an evacuation tube that leads back to the colon irrigation machine.

A total of 20 to 30 gallons of water will be flushed through your colon. It is possible to feel a warm sensation as the toxins and fecal matter leaves your body. However you should not feel any pain.

Colon Irrigation usually takes 30 to 50 minutes

Colon Irrigation Treatment Frequency: Most practitioners will advise two to eight sessions depending on the built-up fecal matter in the colon. Some practitioners say to maintain a well-functioning colon; you need treatments every 3 to 6 months.

Who Should Avoid This Therapy?

People should avoid colon irrigation if they have Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, tumors of the large intestine or rectum, or ulcerative colitis.

Important Information to Consider

Colon irrigation has been around for years and before the advent of antibiotics and other modern medicines, it was used as a popular form of therapy for everything from infections to heart disease to depression. Modern advocates of colon irrigation say it's an important way of maintaining general health and preventing illness. Opponents deny its ability to cure any sort of ailment, and warn that careless administration of the treatments can spread disease and cause serious, even life-threatening problems.
