Sclerotherapy Injection Information

Author: Alan Hood

Sclerotherapy treatment is the name of a non-surgical procedure to removed varicose veins. The procedure involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. This results in a reaction that progressively shrinks the varicose vein. If the vein is labeled as a diseased vein it will typically necessitate several treatments to fully fade away. Of the various treatments available, many patients are finding Sclerotherapy spider vein treatment to be an effective option. Sclerotherapy varicose vein

The solutions utilized in a Sclerotherapy injection procedure include Hypertonic saline, Polidocanol, and Sodium tetradecyl sulphate

Length and details of the Sclerotherapy Injection procedure

The Sclerotherapy procedure typically takes between fifteen minutes to one hour, based on the on the number and overall length of the spider veins.

Prior to Sclerotherapy treatment, patients should avoid such medications as Tetracycline or Minocin, as these can cause staining of the patients skin if taken 6 to 10 days before or after the Sclerotherapy procedure. Your doctor will be able to provide greater guidance for any additional antibiotic medications you may be taking.

In addition to precautions regarding antibiotics, patients should avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medications for 48 hours before and after the Sclerotherapy procedure. Anti-inflammatory medications may interfere with the effective action of the sclerosing solution. If pain is encounter before and after the procedure, patients may use Tylenol as it is not an anti-inflammatory medication. Your doctor should be consulted before discontinuing any medication. Individuals on Prednisone should also consult with their physician as Prednisone may decrease the effectiveness of the sclerosing agent.

Potential Sclerotherapy side effects

Many sclerotherapy side effects typically comprise of such things as bruising, burning sensations, and lumps in the affected areas. Most of these side effects will fade in ongoing healing process. Patients should exercise care in the post procedure period, and avoid such activities involving hot baths or hot steam for several days following treatment.

Serious complications following sclerotherapy are rare. Some of these complications are allergies to the sclerosant chemical, ulceration of the procedure area, and the possibility of deep vein thrombosis. Most allergic reactions are with the Sodium tetradecyl sulphate, and Polidocanol sclerosant solutions. Ulcerations typically heal leaving only a small scar that can be surgically removed. For deep vein thrombosis, the risk is very minimal when small veins are treated but it sometimes occurs during a sclerotherapy procedure of larger varicose veins.

After the treatment the patient will be able resume their normal activities and are encouraged to walk. The individual will be instructed to wear support or compression wraps to compress the treated areas. Vigorous physical activities such as weight lifting or aerobics classes are not advised during this time.

It is recommended that patients avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medications for at least 48 hours after the procedure.

Long-term results of the sclerotherapy procedure

After a patient receives treatment via sclerotherapy, the venous system of the legs should function and look as normal. In order to maintain the results as well as prevent the new instances several habits should be observed. Individuals should start or increase their regiment of Vitamin C so that they receive approximately 2,500 to 4,500 mg. of vitamin C on a daily basis. It is also recommend that individuals utilize support hose whenever possible. In order to avoid a re-occurrence several habits should be observed when performing physical activity. Activities that involve straining and cause damage to the lower bodys vein system can lead to veins being stretched out so that the valves can no longer snap shut and prevent the back flow of blood.

Sclerotherapy cost

Sclerotherapy costs between $100 and $400 per session. As with any procedure your geographical area may determine the overall costs. Sclerotherapy in Houston will typically cost less than Sclerotherapy in Los Angeles.

Will my insurance cover sclerotherapy?

Because sclerotherapy procedure is considered an elective procedure, insurance usually will not cover the operation. Some insurance companies cover sclerotherapy for particular medical circumstances.
