Selling Yourself During The Interview

Author: Carl Mueller

Selling yourself during the interview and during your career as a whole is an important skill that you need to master.

Some people dont feel comfortable bragging about their accomplishments but it really cant be considered bragging if youve done what youre describing.

Besides, there is a difference between openly bragging and simply describing your accomplishments with confidence to a hiring manager.

When speaking with hiring managers after one of my candidates has completed an interview with them, the hiring manager will almost always discuss the interview in terms of accomplishments that the candidate has or doesnt have.

Hiring managers will often interpret your ability to sell yourself during an interview as being indicative of how you will sell yourself if you become part of their company.

For example, some companies can be overly political or aggressive and require a strong person who can comfortably stand up for themselves, their group, their division, etc and your ability to defend and stand up for yourself during the interview is a good indication of how well youd do the same thing if you were hired for the position.

I remember one instance where I got a call from the hiring manager from a company that had just interviewed one of my candidates, a lady who they were very keen on hiring for a senior position.

Their only concern was that she came across during the interview as being a little bit laid back and they questioned whether or not she would be able to defend her groups work in front of the bigger company if she were hired.

Id already done reference checks on the candidate and they had each briefly described her as being someone who would stand up for herself but the company still wasnt entirely sold.

Fortunately, the company allowed me to go back to her references and specifically ask each of them again for more details regarding this particular skill and each confirmed that she would have no trouble defending herself and her group in front of the rest of the company.

In my experience this is the exception rather than the rule. Once a hiring manager finds something about you that they feel is a weakness, it can be very difficult to get them to get past that feeling.

The only way a hiring manager is going to know about your accomplishments is if you mention them in your resume and then elaborate on them during the interview with confidence.

Remember, during the interview the hiring manager is looking to hear about your accomplishments and will consider not only your specific accomplishments but how confident and capable you are of discussing them.

Carl Mueller

My name is Carl Mueller and I'd like to thank you for learning a bit more about me!

I feel that I have numerous relevant experiences during my career that come in useful when helping people with their careers:

I know what it?s like to work internationally, having worked overseas (in New Zealand, from 1994-1998).

I've survived several corporate downsizings while many of my colleagues were being laid off.

I have also experienced being laid off twice myself during corporate downsizings.

I know what it?s like to be self-employed.

I've helped many people find better jobs. I started to work as a professional recruiter in 2000 first as an Information Technology (IT) recruiter and then in general recruitment across many industries including IT, manufacturing and marketing. Since this time, I have helped many people find their dream career and it?s a great feeling.

I experienced one of the slowest hiring periods in recent memory especially during the general hiring slowdown that followed the Y2K frenzy in 1999, the bursting of the dot com bubble in early 2000, and then the employment market bottoming out following September 11, 2001.

These were certainly not great times to be a job searcher in most industries nor was it a particularly good time to be a recruiter.

Following this, I began running the day to day operations of an Internet-based company in early 2003 that focused on developing online software and subscription-based websites for consumers. It was then that I fully realized the power, usefulness and potential of the Internet which really spurred me to set up my own website which you can view in my Personal URL section below this bio.

I?m also a Platinum Ezine Articles Expert as recognized by EzineArticles.com, one of the most visited websites on the Internet. This special designation is earned by having consistently high-quality articles published and viewed on their website. All of my submissions are related to helping you find your dream career and many of my articles get reproduced on other websites by their webmasters.

Good luck with your career and I hope I have been of assistance to you!
