Girls' Boarding Schools

Author: Steve Valentino

Girls' boarding schools have come a long way from "finishing schools" that taught young ladies how to handle themselves Today's parents have little time to spend with their children, with dual careers and busy lifestyles. This is why a lot of parents prefer sending their daughter(s) to help them grow into intelligent, responsible young women.

Girls face many pressures during adolescence. During this time, a main focus becomes attractions for the opposite sex that become all consuming, and school grades are the last thing on many a young lady's mind. Consequently, their grades go down at a point in their education that is crucial to their future. Social pressures, male domination in some fields like math or science, and sexual harassment in public schools are some of the other reasons that girls find it hard to adjust. Some girls are shy and easily embarrassed, especially by boys. Therefore, their natural abilities are suppressed, and it is hard to catch up and recover. All-girls' boarding schools are the answer for girls who suffer from any of these problems.

Girls in boarding schools find a home away from home. They learn what friendship is all about irrespective of religion, region or language. They learn to make decisions and be responsible for them. Girls who have graduated from boarding schools were found to be more independent, confidant, disciplined, focused and successful -- more so than their counterparts who studied in day schools. They learn to live as a community, helping each other like siblings. Girls' boarding schools aim to develop their students in all aspects: academics, sports, art and much more. With everything under the same roof, students can learn many different activities like swimming, sports, music, theatre, cooking, and much more. And, there are no boys to interfere with their development on a day-to-day basis.

There are also special boarding schools for troubled girls. These girls might have come from troubled families or might have problems with drugs, alcohol, pregnancy, etc. Boarding schools offer these girls another chance to change their lives for the better and make intelligent and responsible decisions that will help them in the future. Some girls' boarding schools focus on children who have learning disorders like ADHD. These schools provide therapeutic programs to help these girls' lead normal and productive lives.
